I was singing and playing this tune when my mom walked in, and after she got settled, I asked if she wanted to hear what I made up. She said sure. After one time through, she joined in singing with me, and then we switched. I gave her the guitar, and she played the notes while I sang, then we sang together. It was a really fun, impromptu kind of moment.
She said, “You should finish this song,” since I had only come up with the chorus while just playing around and vibing. The next day, I searched online for how to write out chords over lyrics, and I found a basic Word template. I downloaded it, opened it up in Google Docs, and started to modify it to create my first structured guitar chord song. I still need to learn how to indicate strumming patterns and so many other things, but I’m just enjoying the process of expressing in new ways. It’s a part of my freedom, and even in the messiness of the sound, it brings smiles to those who listen and follow my guitar adventure.

Why guitar? Why now?
As a music artist and songwriter, I've always loved the sound of the guitar. When producing beats, acoustic guitar tracks were always some of my favorites. I also loved adding electric guitar solos to my songs. My mom plays guitar too, and I often get to hear her practicing. I find myself singing along with her playing, even though she can't hear me. So on my 50th birthday, my mom surprised me and took me to Guitar Center to pick out an acoustic guitar. I was so happy. (Read the full story here on why I ended up choosing Sweetwater).
There's a desire inside me to stay committed to learning, even if it's just five minutes a day. I've always wanted to play and sing. It would be a dream come true to use the guitar to perform some of the songs I’ve written and bring healing and upliftment to my soul and to others.
