Today I had my first guitar lesson, and I left feeling a little bit overwhelmed, but in a good way. There was a lot of information and different techniques to absorb, but I was very happy I was able to record the entire session so I can refer to it when I’m practicing.
I like his fast-paced, aggressive teaching style. It doesn’t feel too fast for me, especially since I was able to record the whole lesson on my phone. I can go back, replay parts, and really absorb what he’s teaching. And instead of spending the whole time just learning down-up-down-up-up strums, I’m being introduce to various things at once, but I think he knows he can push me a little.
I like the rhythm he plays with, there’s real soul in it. Definitely not cookie cutter. More of an out-of-the-box, Jimmy Rigg kind of guitarist. The way he blends proper technique with his own flavor is wild to watch. It’s an interesting approach, and I can already tell there’s a lot I’ll be able to learn.
One of the most encouraging parts of this lesson was when he shared that the best way to learn guitar is by writing your own songs.
I happened to bring the chorus to one of the first guitar songs I’ve ever written, “Always Time for Us.” He loved it and said, “This is a bit of a hit,” and I walked away feeling really good about that. We’re going to use that as material moving forward to help me learn fingerpicking and all the rest.
Here’s a snippet from that moment.
I plan to post more parts from the first lesson (when I can get some down time to edit), but for now here’s a fun fact: we both share the story of living in California. He lived in LA for years, and I was just outside in Long Beach. I had no idea I’d eventually return home to Portland, but looking back, it’s clear that decision has lined up with many things I’ve been wanting to see unfold in my life.
You never know how it’s going to happen, but sometimes the pieces come together in ways you couldn’t have planned if you tried.
Well, that wraps it up for now. Thanks if you’re following me on TikTok. I’ve been getting a lot of encouragement there and some solid constructive feedback too. For someone who just picked up this instrument, I’m feeling pretty good. I know this is a long game, and I’m learning to enjoy the moments.
